Entropy is the second law of thermodynamics — the quiet, unstoppable tendency of every ordered system toward disorder.
Tape stretches. Capacitors sag. Motors run flat. Nothing analog ever plays the same twice, and that is precisely why it sounds alive. Digital audio has no entropy: every pass is bit-identical, every oscillator is a perfect reference, every fader sits exactly where you left it — forever. ENTROPY puts the physics back. It is a set-and-forget insert that gives any track the correlated slow drift, thermal wobble, deterministic chaos, and component-aging of hardware that has been switched on for years — applied to pitch, filter, gain, and stereo image, all from one panel.

FOCUS_RACK_MODULES
Chaos attractors — the Lorenz and Rössler systems — are the mathematics of weather, convection and turbulence: motion that is deterministic but never repeats. Until now they have lived locked inside synth modulation menus. ENTROPY extracts them into a cross-purpose insert, and integrates the actual attractor equations in real time.
- · DRIFT — a mean-reverting random walk (an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, the physicist's model of Brownian wander). The "nothing in this circuit is a precision reference" floor.
- · WOBBLE — thermal wobble: a slow quasi-sine whose own rate and depth wander, like a thermostat cycling in a warm room. Periodic, but never quite.
- · CHAOS — a true Lorenz or Rössler attractor, selectable, integrated live. Unhurried lobe-flips and moods, not LFO cycles.
- · AGE — component aging. Each instance is born with its own hidden bias vector and settles toward it over the session. No two instances age alike, and every session starts fresh from the bench.
The four targets tap different state variables of one attractor run — so pitch, filter, gain and image move like four stages fed from the same failing power rail: distinct, but unmistakably related.
- · CORRELATE — sweeps from one master drift signal moving everything (the single shared power rail of a real box) to every target wandering alone.
- · RATE — scales the whole engine from geological (0.05×) to seasick (20×).
- · AMOUNT — a single macro over every depth, so the entire character rides one control.
- · Drift Scope — draws the actual modulation signals the engine is running, not an animation. Four colour-coded traces scroll a twenty-second window with a session-age readout ticking underneath.
Every calibration is deliberate: at moderate settings ENTROPY reads as analog, not as an effect. Push it and it becomes an instrument of its own.
- · PITCH — up to ±60 cents of genuine pitch drift through a continuously modulated delay line, the same physics as tape wow. Sustained sharp excursions soft-limit before flat ones do, exactly like a capstan running out of torque.
- · FILTER — a one-pole low-pass that only breathes down from 21 kHz (up to ~2.2 octaves). Warm components drift dark; ENTROPY does not pretend otherwise.
- · GAIN — ±3 dB of slow level wander. Console VCA, late in its life.
- · STEREO — channel balance drift (±2.5 dB) plus width breathing (±35%) on a decorrelated tap, so the image leans and swells like a mistracking azimuth.
WHO_IT_IS_FOR
- Producers & Sound DesignersThe drift and chaos movement you have been faking with a synth's internal LFOs, available on every track, correlated across four dimensions at once.
- Mix EngineersSubliminal analog motion on busses and stems: the "why does that feel expensive" layer, without committing to hardware.
- Composers & Texture MakersAging, wobble and slow chaos as a compositional voice; automate AMOUNT and let a cue physically decay.
- Lo-Fi & Tape LoversWow, sag and darkening from actual physics rather than a wobble sample.
- Three Rooms, One InstrumentLIGHT, the white-and-gold studio face; DARK, the near-black Void; and NUCLEAR, a Kelvin-era power-station control room with ivory dial faces on institutional sage.
